International Literacy Day


In 1966, UNESCO officially proclaimed September 8 International Literacy Day to actively mobilize the international community and to promote literacy as an instrument to empower individuals, communities and societies.

Grandparents' Day


In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents. In 1978, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter.

National Pet Memorial Day


National Pet Memorial Day is held each year on the second Sunday in September. Established more than 40 yeas ago by the members of the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories, the day honors all pets, both past and present.

National Hug Your Hound Day


Nationally recognized dog expert Ami Moore, The Chicago Dog Coach, declared the 2nd Sunday in September 'National Hug Your Hound Day'. The holiday was created to increase the bond between dogs and their owners and to help dog owners see the world as dogs see it.
