World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
World Information Society Day was proclaimed to be on May 17 by a United Nations General Assembly resolution. The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is observed on May 17 and aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work worldwide. The date was chosen to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization in 1990.

National Defense Transportation Day
National Defense Transportation Day, which occurs annually on the third Friday of May, recognizes the contributions of people who work in the transportation industry and who contribute to the nation's well-being and defense. It is part of National Transportation Week.
