World Press Freedom Day
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Assembly in December 1993. May 3 is the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991. "It is an opportunity to: celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom; assess the state of press freedom throughout the world; defend the media from attacks on their independence; and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty."
National Day of Reason
The National Day of Reason is a secular celebration for humanists, atheists, and other secularists and freethinkers in response to the National Day of Prayer. The day is celebrated on the first Thursday in May of every year. The purpose of the National Day of Reason is to celebrate reason, to raise public awareness about the persistent threat to religious liberty posed by government intrusion into the private sphere of worship, and to help build community among the non-religious in the United States.
